Who We Are
At the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, our Legal Unit provides dedicated and professional legal services in support of the Ministry’s work in sport and youth development. We promote transparency, fairness, natural justice, accountability, integrity and value for money in all legal aspects of the Ministry’s operations.
Our Role
We support the Ministry’s Mission, Vision and strategic priorities by ensuring that our policies, decisions and activities comply with the laws and regulations of Trinidad and Tobago. We also work to minimise legal risk and protect the Ministry’s interests while enabling us to fulfil our mandate to the national community.
What We Do
The Legal Unit has the primary areas of responsibility to:
- Provides legal advice to the Ministry’s Executive Management and Heads of Department on matters related to sport and youth affairs.
- Reviews and drafts contracts, agreements and other legal instruments involving the Ministry.
- Supports the development and review of legislation, policies, regulations and guidelines relevant to the Ministry’s work.
- Assists in ensuring that the Ministry complies with applicable procurement and other legal and regulatory requirements.
- Represents the Ministry’s legal interests in collaboration with the relevant State legal authorities.
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
The Legal Unit supports the Ministry’s Designated Officer in responding to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act, Chapter 22:02. Members of the public seeking information under the Act should follow the Ministry’s published FOIA procedures.

The Legal Unit operates under the authority of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.
